Two grants can help families of children with disabilities in South Africa. Use the eligibility checker below to see what you may qualify for — then we'll guide you through the documents and next steps.
Care Dependency Grant
CDGUp to R2,320/month
Income threshold: ~R228,000/year (single)
For children under 18 with a disability or chronic illness requiring full-time care. Paid to the primary caregiver.
Child Support Grant
CSGUp to R580/month
Broader income threshold — most families qualify
For primary caregivers of children under 18. More broadly available than the CDG — qualifying families may receive both grants simultaneously.

Bring originals + certified copies to the SASSA office
- Child's SA birth certificate or ID document
- Caregiver's SA ID document
- Medical report confirming disability from a registered doctor or specialist
Must state diagnosis and level of care required
- Proof of income / means test (payslip, SASSA affidavit if unemployed)
- Proof of residential address (utility bill, bank statement, or signed letter)
- Child's clinic card or Road to Health card (if under 5)
- School attendance record (if applicable)
Important: grants are not backdated
Your grant will only start from the month you submit your application. Apply as soon as possible — do not wait to have every document. SASSA can advise on what is acceptable.
