Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, sensory processing, and social interaction.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. It affects how a person communicates, processes sensory information, and interacts socially. Autism presents differently in every person — it is a spectrum, not a single fixed presentation. Many autistic people have strengths in pattern recognition, memory, and focused interests alongside their support needs.

Signs to look for

  • Delayed or atypical speech and language development
  • Difficulty with back-and-forth social interaction
  • Intense focus on specific topics or routines
  • Sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or tastes
  • Repetitive movements (stimming) such as rocking or hand-flapping
  • Difficulty with unexpected changes to routines
  • Avoidance of eye contact

These are common indicators, not a diagnostic checklist. Only a qualified professional can diagnose Autism.

Support strategies

Use visual supports

Visual schedules, picture cards, and written instructions reduce reliance on verbal processing and help with transitions.

Provide sensory accommodations

Noise-cancelling headphones, quiet spaces, weighted blankets — identify your child's sensory profile with an OT.

Structured routines

Predictable daily routines reduce anxiety. Give advance warning before transitions ("5 more minutes, then bath time").

Augmentative communication (AAC)

Non-verbal or minimally-verbal children benefit from AAC devices, PECS, or communication apps to express needs.

SASSA Grants

Children with a formal ASD diagnosis that requires full-time care may qualify for the Care Dependency Grant (CDG, ~R2,320/month). A specialist medical report is required. All autistic children whose caregivers meet the means test may qualify for the Child Support Grant (~R580/month).
